SPANISH hotel chain Sol Meliá is expanding in Asia with the launch of its first property in China this year, and two more next year.
The five-star 686-room Gran Meliá Shanghai will open in December, followed by properties in Suzhou and Hangzhou in 2009. Gran Meliá Shanghai will have a pillarless high-ceiling ballroom with seating capacity for 1,000 people, and 14 function rooms that can accommodate up to 150.
Sol Meliá Hotels & Resorts Asia Pacific area vice-president of sales, Ms Sharon Lee, said: “There are not many hotels in China that have such huge ballrooms as Gran Meliá Shanghai.”
Sol Meliá will move its Asian corporate office from Jakarta to Shanghai with the opening of Gran Meliá Shanghai. The group is making a dedicated effort to draw MICE (meeting, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) groups and has established the Meetings Sol Meliá Division, which has 28 offices worldwide, and a business travel team within each property.
